MY DSLR SETTINGS: My aperture was as low as I could go, ƒ/1.4, for two reasons. I wanted the back door to be a blurred, empty space behind her. This extremely low f-stop also allowed me to get her uneven bangs in sharp focus and her eyes, being slightly behind her bangs, in a soft focus. The ISO was 100 for maximum color saturation. My shutter speed was 1/1250 sec. (1250).

TRICKS FOR A BUTTERY, BLURRY BACKGROUND

You don’t need a fancy lens to blur the background if you understand a little about depth of field. Think of a “force field,” as in Star Wars. Everything in the “force field” is in focus, and everything outside of it is blurry. The size of the “force field” (or depth of field) is set by aperture, the distance between subject and background, and the distance between photographer and subject. So to get a blurrier background, try moving closer to your child. Or, move her farther from the background.
